Instructor Training 'Learn from our experience'

So why Driving Instruction?

If you were to ask a number of driving instructors what they liked about their chosen profession their answers would all be very similar …

  • The potential earnings
  • Flexible working hours
  • Job satisfaction
  • The challenge
  • Meeting people
  • Being your own boss

These benefits will no doubt seem appealing and are all within your reach.  So if you have the commitment and dedication to pursue them, then train to join the driver training profession.  It is constantly expanding to open new opportunities for enthusiastic and dedicated individuals and you could be one of them.

What is involved?

In order to legally provide paid driving instruction in the UK you must be registered and approved by the Driving Standards Agency.  When applying to become a DSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) there are certain legal requirements to fulfil. You must:

  • hold a Full United Kingdom Licence
  • have held it for four out the last six years
  • not have been disqualified at any time in the four years prior to registration
  • be a ‘fit and proper’ person with all types of offences taken into account
  • obtain a check from the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau), to check your suitability
  • pass the three part entrance examination
  • pass Parts 2 and 3 within two years of passing Part 1
  • apply for registration within twelve months of passing Part 3

The three different parts of the examination are as follows –

Part 1 – Theory and Hazard Perception  – a multiple choice section and a video based hazard perception section
Part 2 – Driving Ability – consists of an eyesight test followed by a practical test of driving technique
Part 3 – Instructional Ability – consists of a practical test of your ability to instruct

The time taken to fully qualify will depend on the time you have available to study and practice.  Once you pass your Part 1 and Part 2 exams you have the option of instructing for six months on a ‘Trainee Licence’, part supervised by your trainer, or undergo a further 20 hours training.  This enables you to gain valuable practical experience before your Part 3 Test of Instructional Ability.
In order to succeed as a driving instructor you will need to understand that pupils learn at different rates and you will therefore need to adapt your methods accordingly.   You will also need attributes such as :

  • Patience
  • Responsibility
  • Professionalism
  • Confidence
  • Concentration
  • Understanding

Do not worry if you feel that you fall short on some of the above.  That is where your trainer will thoroughly and systematically deal with any deficiencies in order to prepare you for all  foreseeable difficulties.

Training to be a driving instructor is not easy, but with the necessary time and effort the rewards will be great. It is important to choose an instructor trainer that will thoroughly prepare you for what is involved throughout training, during your exams and once working as an instructor.

This is where we come in …

The same commitment to thorough, systematic tuition is continued throughout our instructor training courses. As in driving, we plan for every eventuality in order to be fully prepared to negotiate any problem. Your training will be in-depth and comprehensive covering areas such as :

  • Your theory knowledge and driving ability
  • Instructional and motivational techniques
  • Fault identification, analysis and remedial action
  • Essential business administration
  • Basic vehicle maintenance and mechanical principles
  • Learner Theory and Practical test procedures

The cost of training will include :

  • ALL necessary text books, dvds and revision tools
  • ALL exam, trainee licence and registration fees
  • ALL vehicle use during training and exam use

So what should you do now?

You have taken the first step by enquiring for information, now visualise a version of yourself in the future where you –

  • have a challenging and rewarding career
  • are highly skilled so are paid accordingly
  • are able to choose your working hours
  • have personal and business use of a modern, air conditioned car
  • help clients with their personal and possibly professional development
  • have total control over which direction you take your career

These are just some of the many benefits that you would enjoy on qualifying as a Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructor. If you would like to take advantage of this exciting opportunity and feel that you can commit the time and money needed to train to be a Driving Instructor, then contact us so we can arrange an informal chat.  We can then -

  • discuss the whole process in more depth
  • answer any questions that you might have
  • discuss a training timetable to suit you

You will see that the course is set up with you, the trainee, in mind.

  • We can fit training in around your other commitments
  • You can spread the cost of training in instalments
  • Points during training where you could ‘opt out’ without penalty
  • The course is tailored around you giving you total flexibility

Call 01970 626498 to speak to your trainer Phil Bowker to discuss the way forward.
